Poetry/Prose: Oceans

Everyone is an ocean…
You think you can walk upon water across each,
reaching destination after destination without sinking,
but you are wrong.
Everyone is an ocean…
You think you can just swim upon the surface,
from shore to shore to shore, without tiring,
but you are wrong.
Everyone is an ocean…
You think floating in your boat whilst barely getting wet,
makes you a master of the despondent and deep blue seas,
but you are wrong.
Not until you submerge yourself, diving deep, plumbing the depths…
Not until the waves knock you off your feet and toss you to and fro…
Not until the currents make off with you, carrying you away to places,
you never wanted to go and to which you hope never to return.
Not until (sea) life swallows you up whole and drags you way down,
down deep into the abysses of whatever you perceive darkness to be…
Not until you are cast out, shot forth, and spewed back onto the surface…
Not until this pattern plays itself out tirelessly, over and over again…
Not until you meet with fair weather, and oppressive, and gloomy, and tempestuous…
Not until you endure the pitch darkness of night and the burning brightness of day…
Not until you are in hot water or in cool; lukewarm waters or on very thin ice…
Not until you’ve endured all of these things… ye all of them and more…
Not until then, will you ever truly come to know and understand the ocean surrounding you.
This is why…
Everyone is an ocean…
But quite often, it seems impossible to navigate even your own.
Everyone is an ocean…
But think twice before fancying yourself a skillful, intrepid mariner.
Everyone is an ocean…
But many get lost forever in just one… often without ever realising.
Everyone is an ocean…
But such a place to be born, to live, to play, and to explore, is also a place to die…
Everyone is an ocean…
But sometimes an ocean can feel more like a desert.
Everyone is an ocean…
But is your ocean polluted or nourishing? Tempestuous or calm? Lifeless or abundant?
Everyone is an ocean…
But oceans can sometimes seem more like ephemeral puddles.
Everyone is an ocean…
And an ocean is an entire world unto itself.
