WHAT IS MUSICALITY? Musicality in dance refers to the ability of the artist to hear, and implement into their movements, the subtle nuances of the song’s instrumentality and vocal arrangement. It is the interpretation of most, if not all aspects of the rhythm, beat, groove, vocals, and sound effects (breaks, glitches, drops, etc.), down even to their smallest parts and syllables.
ARE THESE POSTS ALWAYS THE BEST EXAMPLES? No, there may be better videos out there for a particular song/style; however, if the lyrics, movements, clothing, etc., are overly-suggestive/provocative, or if the men are too flamboyant/epicene in their manner, I’m not posting it. I believe one can exhibit great skill (in both freestyle and choreographed form) without having to go to such extremes. Keep this in mind if you think a video with more technical musicality should have made the cut.
Also, note that the line is sometimes hard to define… for a few, it may be reasonable to ask ‘why that one and not this one.’ Why Skylar Moon’s “Belong to you” choreo but not Jade C.’s “Escalate” choreo [where she absolutely (beat-)killed it]. The answer is simple, ‘I just have to go by my own conscience.’
